Common Tree Pests & Diseases in Bucks County: What to Watch For

The tree canopy that defines Bucks County neighborhoods is under more pressure than most homeowners realize. Several of the most destructive insects and diseases now confirmed locally didn’t exist here a generation ago, and the ones that did are moving faster than traditional seasonal inspection cycles can catch. We’ve watched this shift firsthand, and it has changed how we approach every tree assessment we conduct.

Invasive Insects: The Fastest-Moving Threats to Bucks County Trees

Invasive insects are distinct from fungal and bacterial diseases in one critical way: their populations can scale rapidly, and the damage they cause is often irreversible by the time it becomes visible from the ground. Knowing which species are established here, and which trees they target, is the first step toward protecting your property.

Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) was first confirmed in Bucks County in Warrington Township on March 14, 2012, and has since spread throughout the county. The beetle targets all native ash species and kills untreated trees within three to five years. By the time D-shaped exit holes appear in the bark and canopy dieback becomes obvious from the street, the infestation has typically progressed past the point where treatment can save the tree. Early detection, before the canopy shows more than 30 percent decline, is when systemic insecticide treatment delivers meaningful results.

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

Eastern hemlocks are among the most graceful trees on Bucks County’s wooded properties, and hemlock woolly adelgid is their primary threat. The pest is identifiable by white cottony masses clustered at the base of needles, visible from late fall through early spring. Without treatment, an infested hemlock can die within four to ten years depending on tree health and site conditions. Caught early, it responds well to systemic treatment. Spotted Lanternfly

Spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) first reached Berks County in 2014 and spread into Bucks County, which remains under an active Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture quarantine as of 2025. Unlike emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly rarely kills trees outright. Instead, it weakens them through cumulative tree stress: it feeds on sap from more than 100 plant species, excretes a sugary waste called honeydew, and that honeydew triggers sooty mold growth on leaves and bark. Trees already stressed by drought, disease, or injury are the most vulnerable to serious decline from repeated lanternfly feeding.

Emerging Diseases Reshaping the Local Tree Canopy

Insect pests get more attention, but some of the most consequential threats we’re seeing right now are diseases, and several of them have no cure. Understanding the mechanism behind each one helps clarify why early diagnosis changes the outcome.

Beech Leaf Disease

Beech leaf disease is caused by a microscopic roundworm called Litylenchus crenatae mccannii, a nematode that invades leaf buds and disrupts normal leaf development. The disease has spread to all 67 Pennsylvania counties and is confirmed throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. The stakes locally became clearer in June 2025, when Buckingham Township issued a public advisory after detecting beech leaf disease within the township, warning that the disease can kill mature beeches within five years without intervention, and young trees can die even faster. Look for dark banding between leaf veins and a leathery, crinkled texture; symptoms worsen each season and won’t resolve on their own.

Bacterial Leaf Scorch

Bacterial leaf scorch is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium transmitted by leafhoppers and spittlebugs that colonizes the tree’s vascular system and blocks water movement to the outer leaf tissue. The result is browning that starts at leaf margins and progresses inward, typically appearing on the same branches year after year. Oaks and maples are the species we encounter this on most frequently in Bucks County. There’s no cure; once established, the infection is permanent. However, growth regulators and supportive care can slow the rate of decline in trees that are otherwise structurally sound, extending their useful life by years.

Thousand Canker Disease

Eastern black walnut is a native Bucks County tree with significant ecological and property value, and Thousand Canker Disease is now confirmed here. The disease works through a two-part mechanism: the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis) bores into the bark and introduces a fungal pathogen, Geosmithia morbida, as it tunnels. Each entry point creates a small canker under the bark; individually they’re minor, but hundreds accumulating across the trunk and branches girdle the vascular system over time. By the time crown dieback is visible, significant internal damage has already occurred.

Fungal Diseases That Compound Stress over Time

Not every disease is immediately fatal. Several common fungal conditions in Bucks County work more slowly, compounding stress over multiple seasons until the tree becomes vulnerable to secondary damage or structural failure. These are the three we diagnose most often during inspections:

  • Anthracnose: Triggered by cool, wet springs, anthracnose causes irregular brown blotches on leaves and dieback at twig tips. Oaks, sycamores, and dogwoods are the most commonly affected trees in our area. A single season rarely causes lasting harm, but repeated infections compound stress and create entry points for bark-boring insects.
  • Verticillium wilt: A soil-borne fungal disease with no cure, verticillium wilt causes one-sided yellowing and wilting in maples and ash trees as it blocks water movement through the vascular system. Early diagnosis determines whether targeted management can preserve the tree or whether removal is the responsible path before the condition spreads through root systems to adjacent trees.
  • Oak wilt: Caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum, oak wilt spreads both through underground root grafts between neighboring oaks and through sap-feeding beetles. According to Penn State Extension, oak wilt isn’t currently known east of the Susquehanna River, so Bucks County trees aren’t confirmed to be affected at this time. Even so, the disease is actively expanding across Pennsylvania, and the precautions are worth knowing. Red oaks are especially vulnerable and can die within weeks of showing first symptoms in areas where it’s present. Pruning oaks during spring and early summer, when sap-feeding beetle activity peaks, significantly increases infection risk; late fall through mid-April is the safest pruning window in this region.

Why Timing the Inspection Is the Whole Game

The most important thing these conditions share is that most are manageable when identified before the canopy shows visible decline, and unmanageable once that threshold is crossed. Emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid, and beech leaf disease all have treatment options that become ineffective or unavailable once a tree is significantly compromised. The same is true of verticillium wilt, where early diagnosis shapes whether management or removal is the right call.

Bucks County’s climate works against slow response. Humid summers accelerate fungal progression, and warmer springs are activating insect cycles earlier than they were even a decade ago, which shortens the window between initial infestation and irreversible damage. Several of the conditions above also produce overlapping early symptoms, which means a misidentification leads to either no treatment where one was needed or the wrong treatment where a different one was.
